David Durden

David Durden is a distinguished American swimming coach, renowned for his leadership in collegiate and international swimming. A 1998 graduate of UC Irvine with a degree in electrical engineering, Durden was a standout swimmer for the Anteaters from 1994 to 1997, clinching the 200 butterfly title at the 1997 Big West Conference Championships. His coaching journey began as an assistant at Auburn University from 2002 to 2005, where he contributed to six NCAA championships. He then served as the head coach at the University of Maryland from 2005 to 2007 before taking the helm at UC Berkeley in 2007. Under his guidance, the Cal Bears men's team has secured six NCAA championships and achieved 14 top-two finishes in 15 years, solidifying its position as a premier program in collegiate swimming. Durden's influence extends beyond the collegiate level, having served as the head coach for the U.S. men's Olympic swimming team at the 2020 Tokyo Games, following his role as an assistant coach in 2016. His swimmers have amassed numerous Olympic medals, including 11 at the 2016 Rio Olympics alone. Recognized for his exceptional coaching, Durden has been honored with seven NCAA Coach of the Year awards and 12 Pac-10 Coach of the Year accolades.
