Dan Stratford is the head coach of the West Virginia University men's soccer program in Morgantown, West Virginia, a position he has held since January 2020. A former Mountaineer player and assistant coach, Stratford entered his seventh season leading his alma mater in 2026 after returning to WVU following a highly successful run as head coach at the University of Charleston.
Stratford played for West Virginia from 2004-07 and later served on the Mountaineers' staff from 2011-13. Before coming back to Morgantown as head coach, he spent 2014-16 as an assistant at Charleston, where he helped the program reach three Division II Final Fours and post two national runner-up finishes. He was elevated to head coach in 2017 and quickly established one of the most dominant stretches in Division II men's soccer. Charleston went 61-4-5 from 2017-19, won national titles in 2017 and 2019, captured three conference regular-season championships and two conference tournament crowns, and posted elite defensive numbers along the way. His 2017 team finished 21-1-2 and won the school's first men's soccer national championship. In 2018, Charleston allowed only four goals and finished 18-1-2 after an unbeaten regular season. In 2019, the Golden Eagles went 22-2-1, outscored opponents 87-8, recorded 17 shutouts, and closed the year on a 12-match winning streak. Stratford was recognized as the Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year for all sports in 2017 and 2019, and he was part of a two-time United Soccer Coaches Division II Coaching Staff of the Year.
