Dan Ruyle
Assistant Coach
Veteran collegiate coach Dan Ruyle joined the Virginia Tech men’s golf program as assistant coach in August 2022, bringing more than two decades of experience in player development, recruiting, and program leadership. Working alongside head coach Brian Sharp, Ruyle helps guide the Hokies’ nationally competitive program with an emphasis on technical refinement, academic support, and team culture.
Before arriving in Blacksburg, Ruyle served as assistant coach at Elon University, where the Phoenix posted three top-five finishes during the 2022 spring season, including a fourth-place result at the CAA Championship. Prior to that, he was interim head coach of the women’s golf program at Winthrop University and spent four seasons (2017–2021) as assistant men’s golf coach at East Carolina University. While at ECU, his teams earned back-to-back Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Academic Team honors and produced three All-American Athletic Conference selections.
Earlier in his career, Ruyle gained valuable experience as a volunteer assistant with the University of North Carolina men’s golf team (2016–17), helping the Tar Heels to consecutive NCAA Regional berths and a 2017 NCAA Championship appearance. From 2000–2015, he built one of NCAA Division III’s most respected dual programs as head men’s and women’s golf coach at Southwestern University in Texas. His tenure there included nine NCAA Championship appearances, four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles, and eight All-Americans. Ruyle was a four-time SCAC Coach of the Year and the 2008 WGCA Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year.
A former player at West Texas A&M, Ruyle also competed professionally in Northern Texas PGA section events. His professional and administrative experience extends to service on NCAA, GCAA, and WGCA committees, including a five-year term as GCAA Division III Director.
Originally from Texas, Ruyle and his wife, Erin, reside in Blacksburg with their rescue dogs, Linus and Jeanie.
