Butch Thompson
Head Coach
Butch Thompson was named Auburn’s head baseball coach on October 22, 2015, and enters his 11th season leading the program in 2026. One of the longest-tenured and most successful coaches in program history, Thompson has amassed more than 320 wins at Auburn and ranks third all-time in victories for the Tigers. Under his leadership, Auburn has made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including College World Series trips in 2019 and 2022. His teams have captured regional championships and advanced to four of the five Super Regionals in program history, highlighted by hosting the program’s first-ever home Super Regional in 2025. Following that record-setting season, he signed a contract extension through at least 2031.
Recognized as one of the nation’s premier pitching developers and recruiters, Thompson has coached 34 Division I All-Americans and helped 25 former pitchers reach the Major Leagues. During his Auburn tenure, 49 players have been selected in the MLB Draft, including numerous top-10 round picks and No. 1 overall selection Casey Mize. A native of Amory, Mississippi, Thompson previously served as an assistant at Auburn, Mississippi State, Georgia, and Birmingham-Southern, and was head coach at Jefferson State Community College. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern and a master’s degree from UAB. Thompson and his wife, Robin, have three daughters and two grandchildren.
