Brian Sharp
Head Coach
Brian Sharp, a Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame inductee (2009) and the 2009 Jan Strickland National Assistant Coach of the Year, serves as head coach of the Hokies’ men’s golf program — a position he has held since January 2019. A two-time Virginia Tech graduate and one of the most respected coaches in collegiate golf, Sharp succeeded his longtime mentor Jay Hardwick after 16 years as an assistant and 11 as associate head coach.
Under his leadership, Virginia Tech has continued to compete among the ACC’s most consistent golf programs, balancing national competitiveness with academic excellence and strong player development. Sharp’s Hokies have produced multiple all-conference performers while maintaining elite team GPAs and a reputation for sportsmanship and consistency.
A standout player in his own right, Sharp was a four-year starter and team captain who won four collegiate tournaments, including the 1995 Metro Conference Championship. He graduated as the program’s all-time scoring leader (74.14 average) and remains the only Hokie golfer to earn four All-Metro Conference and four All-State selections. After turning professional in 1995, Sharp played on developmental circuits and the Buy.com (Korn Ferry) Tour before returning to Blacksburg to begin his coaching career.
In 2009, Sharp earned the Jan Strickland Award presented by TaylorMade–Adidas as the nation’s top assistant coach, an honor that led to his 2010 appointment as assistant coach for Team USA in the Palmer Cup at Royal Portrush, where the U.S. earned its first overseas victory since 2002.
A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Sharp holds a bachelor’s degree in finance (1995) and an MBA (2006) from Virginia Tech. He and his wife, Margaret, live in Blacksburg with their two children, Meredith and Cameron.
