Brett Nelson begins the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach for the Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball program in Richmond, Virginia, returning to VCU after previously serving as the Rams' director of basketball operations in 2006-07.
Before rejoining VCU, Nelson was an assistant coach at N.C. State in 2024-25 under Kevin Keatts. He spent the previous season at UMass, where the Minutemen won 20 games and earned a top-four seed in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament for the first time in more than 15 years. From 2019 to 2023, he was the head coach at Holy Cross. His teams there produced five All-Patriot League selections and four All-Rookie Team honorees, and the 2019-20 team set a school record with eight Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections.
