Betsy Freeburg
Head Coach
Betsy Freeburg was named head coach of the UAB volleyball program on July 2, 2020, and enters her sixth season leading the Blazers in 2025. Recognized as one of the nation’s rising coaches, she was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) “Thirty Under 30” list in 2020. During her tenure at UAB, Freeburg has guided the Blazers to four postseason appearances across Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference. Her squads have shown steady competitiveness, highlighted by a 12-win season in 2022 and multiple double-digit win campaigns. Freeburg has focused on building a disciplined, defensively sound program while continuing to elevate recruiting and player development.
Prior to UAB, Freeburg spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Samford, helping the Bulldogs capture back-to-back Southern Conference Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament berths in 2018 and 2019. She previously served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgia State and has been actively involved with USA Volleyball’s High Performance programs. As a player at the University of Florida (2009-12), Freeburg helped lead the Gators to four NCAA Championship appearances, including an Elite Eight run, and earned Second Team All-SEC honors as a senior captain. Her blend of championship playing experience and diverse coaching background continues to shape UAB’s volleyball program.
