Ben Maxwell
Head Coach
Ben Maxwell is the head coach of the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, entering his 13th season leading the Tritons and his 15th overall on the Eckerd tennis coaching staff for the 2025-26 seasons. Since assuming full leadership of both teams in December 2013, Maxwell has strengthened the depth and competitiveness of the program within the Sunshine State Conference, consistently producing All-Conference athletes and notable team achievements. In 2016, his men’s program recorded a school-record 12 wins—including seven 9-0 sweeps—highlighting his impact on team performance early in his head coaching tenure. More recently, under his guidance in 2023 and 2025, multiple players earned First-Team All-SSC honors and national rankings, including singles and doubles successes against nationally ranked opponents. On the women’s side, his leadership in 2024 resulted in the program’s most victories since 2006 and player singles wins milestones. His teams have also excelled academically, earning the William J. Mathews Academic Excellence Award for the highest team GPA across Eckerd athletics over multiple years.
Maxwell’s connection to Eckerd tennis runs deep: he graduated from the college in 2011, having been a four-year anchor on the men’s tennis team, a four-time captain, and the Most Valuable Player for the 2009-10 season. As a player, he earned national NCAA Division II rankings in both singles and doubles competition, and was a top-ranked junior in Florida and nationally. Before becoming head coach, Maxwell served as assistant coach and interim head coach, and also worked as the Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness at Eckerd. Beyond collegiate coaching, he has over 15 years of experience as a head racquet technician and stringer for high-level junior and professional tournaments, and works with elite players including WTA professionals. Outside of tennis, Maxwell enjoys freediving and spearfishing, pursuits that reflect his affinity for physical and mental challenges. He resides in St. Pete Beach with his wife.
