Aliann Pompey is the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country at St. John's University in Queens, New York, a position she assumed in August 2021 after seven seasons as an assistant coach under Jim Hurt. Since taking over the program, she has led St. John's athletes to repeated success at the BIG EAST level and has had NCAA Championship qualifiers in each of her first three seasons in charge. Her teams have produced conference high-point and most outstanding track performers across both indoor and outdoor championship meets, including Leah Anderson, Tatyana McKenzie and Jamora Alves. In 2023-24, Chinenye Onourah and Nora Haugen advanced to the NCAA East Regional, and Haugen moved on to the NCAA Track & Field Championships, where she placed 19th in the 800 meters while also setting school marks in the indoor and outdoor 800 and the sprint medley relay. Alves also reached the NCAA Track and Field Championships in discus in 2023.
Before becoming director, Pompey was part of the St. John's staff during a productive period for the program's sprinters and hurdlers. Under her coaching, Leah Anderson set program records in the 200 and 400 meters during the 2019-20 indoor season and earned BIG EAST Most Outstanding Performer in track events and High Point Performer honors after winning three gold medals at the conference indoor meet. Pompey also coached Anderson to similar conference recognition outdoors in 2018. Other athletes she worked with at St. John's included Pariis Garcia, a school record-holder and two-time NCAA Regional qualifier who won multiple BIG EAST titles before going on to compete for Puerto Rico, and Adriana Wright, a record-holder in both the 60-meter and 100-meter hurdles who collected BIG EAST titles across hurdles, sprints and relay events. Maya Stephens also won several conference titles during Pompey's time on staff and later represented Canada in international relay competition. In 2016, Pompey helped coach Claire Mooney to a 15th-place finish at the NCAA National Championships in the 500 meters, earning USTFCCCA Second-Team All-America honors.
