Alex Devine is an assistant coach for Duke football in Durham, North Carolina, where he works primarily with the Blue Devils’ defensive tackles. He joined the staff in February 2024, originally serving as a defensive analyst during the 2024 season before being promoted to associate defensive line coach for 2025 and assistant coach in 2026. His work has centered on the interior defensive line, helping Duke develop productive, all-conference players and one of the nation’s most disruptive fronts. With Devine’s assistance in 2025, defensive tackle Aaron Hall earned Third Team All-ACC honors after starting all 14 games and recording 44 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and four quarterback pressures. Hall tied for 13th in the ACC in tackles for loss and was part of a Duke defense that featured three players with at least 9.0 tackles for loss, making the Blue Devils one of only three ACC programs to reach that mark. Hall also finished the year with five tackles in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and received the game’s Jimmy Rogers Jr. Most Valuable Lineman award. Devine also helped graduate transfer Josiah Green settle into Duke’s system. Green started all 14 games, earned the team’s Hard Hitter Award on defense, and closed the year with 37 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three pass breakups, and two quarterback pressures. In wins over ACC in-state opponents, Green contributed 17 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Duke’s defensive tackles were also highly productive in 2024.
The Blue Devils finished second nationally in tackles for loss per game at 8.9 and fourth in sacks per game at 3.3. Devine helped guide Kendy Charles to Second Team All-ACC recognition after Charles posted 50 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks. Hall added honorable mention all-conference honors that year with 41 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Before arriving at Duke, Devine spent the 2023 season at Holmes Community College as assistant defensive line coach, helping mentor three defensive linemen who went on to earn Division I scholarships. Earlier, he worked at Utah State from 2021 to 2022, first as defensive front specialist and then as defensive line coach. During those two seasons, Utah State ranked third nationally in tackles for loss in 2021 and 11th in 2022, appeared in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl and the SERVPRO First Responders Bowl, tied the school record with 11 wins in 2021, and won its first Mountain West Championship. Before Utah State, Devine spent five seasons at Miami in a variety of roles. He served as a graduate assistant from 2016 to 2018 before becoming assistant director of player development for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. His coaching path began while he was completing his degree at Mississippi State, where he worked as a student assistant coach and student recruiting assistant in 2014 and 2015 as the Bulldogs went 19-7 and reached the 2014 Orange Bowl and 2015 Belk Bowl. Devine played offensive line at Mississippi Delta Community College in 2011 and 2012 before finishing his college career at Mississippi State. A native of Vaiden, Mississippi, he earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Mississippi State in December 2015 and later completed a master’s degree in liberal studies from Miami.
