AJ Bonetti is the head coach of Georgetown volleyball in Washington, D.C. He became the program’s 10th head coach after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Maryland. Bonetti arrived with experience across multiple levels of collegiate volleyball and a background that includes recruiting, player development, scouting, analytics, and operations. At Maryland, he helped the Terrapins become one of the nation’s strongest defensive teams at the net, including a 2021 season in which they led the NCAA with 3.11 blocks per set. He also coached Rainelle Jones to national leads that year in both total blocks with 187 and blocks per set at 1.73. During Bonetti’s final two seasons at Maryland, the Terrapins combined for 35 wins and recorded three victories over top-10 AVCA opponents. Maryland defeated No. 2 Wisconsin in five sets in the 2021 Big Ten opener, swept No. 9 Purdue on the road in 2022, and beat No.
5 Ohio State in four sets in College Park the following season. Before Maryland, Bonetti spent two seasons as an assistant at Tennessee, where he helped develop Erica Treiber into one of the nation’s top middle hitters. Treiber earned AVCA All-Southeast Region honors and honorable mention All-America recognition during his time there. Earlier in his career, Bonetti spent seven seasons at UNC Wilmington and was promoted to associate head coach for his final two years. The Seahawks posted three 20-win seasons during his tenure and won the Colonial Athletic Association championship in 2015 with a 24-8 record. Ten UNC Wilmington players earned All-CAA honors while he was on staff, including four during the 2015 title season. Bonetti began his coaching career locally at George Washington, where he served for two seasons as a graduate assistant and volunteer assistant, working as video coordinator and overseeing strength and conditioning. His experience also includes work with the USA Volleyball men’s national team as a statistician for World League events in 2008, along with operations and facility management duties and a role directing statistical acquisition at the High Performance Championships in Tucson. A native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Bonetti earned a degree in exercise physiology from East Stroudsburg in 2005 and later completed a master’s degree in exercise science from George Washington in 2008.
