Abby Detering
Associate Head Coach
Abby Detering is the associate head coach for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights women’s volleyball program, entering her fourth season on the staff and her first full seasons in the associate head coach role after being elevated in May 2024. Working primarily with the Scarlet Knight setters, Detering has been a key contributor to the program’s rapid growth during the Caitlin Schweihofer era, helping Rutgers establish new rally-era standards and achieve consistent competitive gains within the Big Ten. Her impact has been reflected in improved offensive efficiency, record-setting assist totals, and the continued rise of Rutgers’ attack on both a conference and national stage. In April 2025, Detering was recognized as one of the nation’s top young coaches, earning a spot in the AVCA’s prestigious Thirty Under 30 class, which honors emerging leaders in collegiate volleyball.
Detering joined Rutgers in 2022 following three seasons as an assistant coach at Kent State, where she helped develop all-conference performers and guided an offense that led the Mid-American Conference in hitting percentage. As a former elite collegiate athlete, Detering brings championship-level experience to the coaching staff. She began her playing career at Florida before transferring to Penn State, where she earned AVCA All-America honorable mention recognition and helped the Nittany Lions to multiple NCAA Tournament victories and a national semifinal appearance. After graduating from Penn State in 2017 with a degree in communication arts and sciences, she competed professionally in Europe. A highly decorated high school standout in Ohio, Detering was inducted into the Lake Catholic High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025. Her blend of Big Ten pedigree, professional playing experience, and player-centered coaching approach continues to shape Rutgers volleyball’s upward trajectory.
